Mabon Recipe - Apple Crumble

Celebrate the first official day of Autumn with our sweet and spiced Apple Crumble ensuring a cosy sabbat.

Mabon, also known as the Autumn Equinox, takes its name from the Welsh god of mythology, Mabon. He is the son of the Earth Mother Goddess Modron, and is the Child of Light.

The Green Man (Horned God) prepares for the return of death and rebirth. The Goddess is radiant as Harvest Queen and the God finally dies with His gift of pure love with the cutting of the last grain.

With equal days and night, this is the time where nature is in its balance. It is a time to be thankful for what the earth has provided.

I cannot think of a better recipe to show my thanks for the earth's provision than a warming Apple Crumble using apples from my own garden.

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 3 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Crumble topping

  • 175 plain flour

  • 110g caster sugar

  • pinch of salt

  • 110g cold vegan butter, cubed

  • 1 tbsp oats

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp allspice

  • 3/4 chopped mixed nuts

Method

  1. Preheat the oven 190 degrees celsius/170 fan assisted/gas mark 5.

  2. Mix your sliced apples in a bowl with 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon, then pat down into a pie dish.

  3. In a bowl add the flour, sugar and salt and rub the cold butter into the mixture with your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

  4. Mix in oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and chopped nuts to the mix and stir to combine.

  6. Bake the crumble for 35-40 mins until golden brown.

And there you have it! A delightful homemade apple crumble that’s sure to fill your kitchen with the comforting aromas of cinnamon and baked apples. Whether you're serving it up with custard, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or enjoying it on its own, this dessert is perfect for cosy evenings and celebrating the Autumn Equinox.
